Targets of the month

2008-12-30

We would like to encourage all portal of supernovae users to perform observational campaigns for particularly bright and easily observed objects. We try to provide you all the necessary tools to prepare and to reduce your observations. In our portal you can put your own results, compare it with the other observers' data and produce the lightcurve of the supernovae. We hope this new feature (Targets of the month) allows to obtain more convincing and interesting results.

New target of the month

SN 2008in in M 61 (Virgo)

Discovered by Koichi Itagaki on December 26th, 2008. The sixth supernova in M 61 (after 1926A, 1961I, 1964F, 1999gn and 2006ov).

Please refer to our list "Recommended for observation" (click the name of the supernova in the list) for further details, including suggested coordinates for pointing the telescope and a map with the position of supernova and suggested reference star for brightness measurements. Detailed instructions in "How to take measurements?" and in "Information and tips for teachers" on the main page of the portal may also be helpful. Good luck!

Previous targets of the month

Due to the fact that the maps for comparison stars were not available between September and December 2008 we did not propose any objects in this period.

August 2008

SN 2008eh in NGC 2997 (Antlia)

Located in a beautiful spiral galaxy. Discovered by Berto Monard on July, 21st.

July 2008

SN 2008ee in NGC 307 (Cetus)

Discovered by Berto Monard on July 16th.

June 2008

SN 2008cq in Hydra

Discovered by Berto Monard on May 29, 2008 in an anonymous galaxy.

May 2008

SN 2008bk in NGC 7793 (Sculptor)

Somewhere southern, but still quite bright (16 magnitudo). Type II supernova discovered by Berto Monard on March 25, 2008.
